BFL Wiley

General No Comments »

I did exactly what I wanted to do in the tourny.  I hit my first spot and worked my pop-r across the ramp.  I had one fish blow up and miss the bait.  I then jumped to my next spot and again workedthe bait across a boat ramp.  This time I put a keeper in the boat.

My next spot already had someone in the area but I puled in behind them and started throwing the pop-r but did not have any fish come up.  I then picked up my 4 blade spinner bait and started slow rolling it under the bait pods.  I had three fish absolutely slam the bait but no hook ups.  I had a trailer hook on so I added a second one.  but I did not have any more fish take it.  When I looked at my blade the split ring was all stretched out.  The fish have been hitting the blade and not the hook.

My next spot had a lot of bait and active fish.  But still only had three slams and no hook ups.  So I added another trailer hook and put one more fish in the boat.  I had to corral the bait up on a shallow shelf to get the fish active and chasing.  I may have spent too much time in this area but it had some really good fish in the 4-5 pound range chasing bait.

I then headed down to Tega Kay to work that marina and I had one fish grab my jig but it onnly had it by the trailer so that was a miss.

I worked a few more areas but only had a couple of dinks.  I ended up with 2 fish for 3-5 and in 56th place.  But this moved me up to 28th place overall for the year and made me eligible for the BFL regional in Ablemarle Sound in a week.

A little bit wet today

General No Comments »

I woke up around 4:00 to the sound of wind and rain.  It did not rain hard all day but it did a little more than drizzle constantly.  So no matter how good the rain suit you end up being wet.  I had plans to run up to the dam but I did not feel like getting pelted with rain the whole way.  I have a helmet but I cleaned out the boat a couple of weeks ago and decided I have been hauling this thing around all year and have not used it in 5 months so I took it out of the boat and put it on the shelf.  So I had to run without today.

I stayed close and worked some areas that I did not hit the rest of the week.  I ran a bunch of spots and managed to find 3 more areas that had the stuff I needed.  I took 2 fish today not on purpose but they were not letting go.

I decided to call it a day around 1:00 because I know the gas situation is tough around here and I thought I would get in early and beat the Friday rush.  But every station I went by was out of gas.  I had to go to exit 65 from exit 82 to get gas.  As I was filling up I put my motor totor on and noticed something moving when I hit the trim.  I lost a bolt and washer from the pin that holds my trim unit in place.  So I had to run around and find one and finally did.

So I got back to the park and started cleaning up my boat and getting my equipment ready for the tourny.  I am a gold member so I asked Alan if he would represent me at the pre-meeting.  I ended up pulling boat number 9 and will launch at 7:15 back in at 3:15.

I hope it stays kind of cloudy and I will power fish my way all day.

A better day on Wylie

General 1 Comment »

I hit some areas that I thought would produce and they did I had a few fish on a couple of different lures.  I either shook them off or let them drop it. I went to some spots that I fished in the TBF National Championship.  What a good choice.  I found bait and active fish all good ones.

I did not make it up as far as I wanted to, so I will have to run a little further tomorrow.  Maybe I will start up top and work my way down.

I know I am leaving out a bunch of details but I know a bunch of people have been searching on the term Lake Wylie so I will keep it to myself for a few more days.

More wind on Wylie

General No Comments »

I hit the lake at first light again and worked some good stuff in LA.  I worked it for an hour and did not have a fish.  I am fishing for the win so I am not throwing the shaky head too much.  Every time I pick it up I get fish mostly 8-10 inchers and those won't help on a lake with a 14" minimum.  So I am just looking for 5 good bite a day.

I then moved toward the dam and fished a few spots with a lot of big rock and still nothing.  Of course these were right in the main stream of the wind and it was howling out.  That may have played apart in not getting any hits or maybe just not feeling them take it.

I then moved to a small creek out of the wind but there were 2 other boats already there.  So I used the break in the wind to tie on a few baits and get some rods ready.

I then hit a few spots that I thought for certain would put some fish in the boat but nothing.  I would work and area with the big fish baits and get nothing and then go back and throw the shaky head and catch dinks.

I did find 2 more spots that would take the other baits. So I am adding them to my milk run.  I stayed out for 12 hours and really did not find a lot.  I do believe that the areas I have found can be worked a lot more thoroughly and give up more fish than I have seen.

I will head up river tomorrow and see what it looks like up there.

On the Water again

General No Comments »

I hit the water at first light and started close by in Big Allison.  I worked a few deep brush piles and some shallow ones.  I traveled way up BA and hit a fish here and there but nothing great and nothing over 2 pounds. I then worked into Little Allison and pretty much had the same luck a few fish but nothing to write home about.

I traveled to a set of submerged islands that had some brush in the saddle.  The wind was blowing pretty good and  I hit a fish that was close to a keeper off the edge.  I may come back and check this out again to see if it holding anything worth while.

I then moved into the mouth of Nivens creek and hit a keeper in 25 foot of water and had one miss a top water.  I moved may way up the creek and hit some major areas with no luck.  I came back to the mouth and worked the other way and hit a dink.  I then moved to an area that I will give more details about later in the week after the tourny.

This other area I hit or had follow 4 fish all over 3 pounds.  I will investigate similar areas the rest of the week and see if I can make it into a pattern to win this thing.

A whole lot of driving

General 1 Comment »

Of course the Wife's new Jeep was acting up again so we dropped it off at Carmax to get fixed in the morning.  Then we headed to Home Depot to finalize the carpet install. After that we went to pick up the Wife's new glasses.

So then we were back home and started loading the camper to head to Wylie.  I hooked it up and then made the Wife drive it to route 77.  I just wanted her to do it so she knew she could just in case she had to some time.

We made it to the campground and set up the 5th wheel.  Then back down the road I went to pick up my boat.  I made it back and then set up the dish and we were settled in for the evening.

I also grabbed the mail and my Mom sent me the Meadville Tribune that mentioned me in an article about the local fisheries.

Change of plans

General No Comments »

We were heading to Wylie this morning but decided to take another day on the house.  I tried to go get some more oil for the Biesel set up but they were still empty.  Not sure if someone else is taking the oil or what but no oil was there again.  I came back home and made up a small batch from the oil I still had from last week and added it to my truck.

We did the finishing details on the bedroom and it is pretty much all done and staged.  Then we started packing up some stuff to head over to Laura's we packed all of Travis' toys and the family board games and headed over.  We unloaded the truck and then  I helped Dave pull up the carpet in our room so he can lay down the new hard wood floors.  Then we did a little kitchen re-organization and then helpd go through Travis' room.

My first parade

PR Work No Comments »

I was invited to be in the parade by Nancy Galloway our Allstate insurance agent.  She made up some banners and a placard for the boat.  I had my Yamaha hat on and I wanted a little more so I knew the TBF of SC had a big banner so I begged to borrow it for the parade and strapped it to my boat.  The parade was pretty cool, lots of kids smiling and waving.

After the parade I had parking duty again and did that until 9:00.  This time I had a golf cart to sit on for the majority of the day.  As soon as 9:00 came it was back to money and tickets.  This time it took until 1:00 in the morning to get it all done.

A little home work then FunFest

General No Comments »

I kept working on the bedroom this morning.  I added new fixtures, hung blinds and curtain rods, and caulked the tub, sinks and counters.

We needed to be at the FunFest at 3:30 so we drove over I dropped the wife off at the ticketing and info booth and picked up the 2 other TBF volunteers Chuck Kinard and Herman Vining to help co-ordinate the Junior National Guard do all the parking for the event.

The event started at 5:00 and we had to park the cars until 9:00.  It went very smoothly ans the kids did a great job at parking.

At 9:00 we were able to stop that job and I went to find the Wife.  We had to do a lot of money counting and ticket weighing and finally got out of there around 11:00.

Still working on the bedroom

General No Comments »

Got up and after breakfast headed right into the bedroom to finish the floor.  The alcove and closet were left from yesterday.  Of course it had lots of cuts and it is a tight area so it took just as long as the rest of the room all together.

After finishing off the flooring I had to re-grout the tile in the bathroom and then keep doing the little things that needed to be done.

I went upstairs and removed the old tiles from the floors and got it ready for the carpeter's.

The Wife had to work this evening at the FunFest so I pretty much just chilled out and caught up on some reading.
