Tack and Tech

We all know how hard fishing is on every piece of equipment that you own. How many times have you set the hook and had the line pop? Or, hook up with a nice fish and as soon as it breaks the surface it throws your lure. How about that pump that had you bailing water into it during that important tournament? All of these problems can change your attitude and severely handicap you during the event.

I am going to give you my "pre-spring" list of what I do before the season starts. I always have a log book and pencil in my boat. I use it for everything from writing down good spots with triangulation points and GPS numbers, just in case my GPS dies. I keep notes on lures and colors for specific lakes. And I write down any problems that I had during the day. If you step on a crank bait and bend the hooks up, you do not want to be throwing that lure with bad hooks when you really need it. If you have a reel that just is not quite up to par, write this down. When you run out of certain items such as hooks, certain colors in a lure, Carolina beads, or whatever it may be, just jot it down so you can remember it for replacement.

If you take a look at my schedule, I get really busy when the season rolls around and I do not have the time to worry about things that do not function properly. When it is time to fish, I do not have the time to be making repairs or looking for lures that I used up last season. This is where the "pre-season" comes into play.

I take out my log book and start making repairs to the items that I know need something done to them. I can look at my list of items that I used up and make that order to my favorite supplier and fill that empty spot in my tackle box. The rod with the loose eye on it can be fixed at my local tackle store, the two reels that just did not cast like they should can be sent to the manufacturer for a cleaning and fixing.

You see I do all of these things in the "pre-season" in order to have my regular season go along as smoothly as possible. I do not want to be worried about little details during the fishing season. The more I get done now, the less I have to worry about when it counts.
