Fluke Fishing
Since the introduction of the soft jerkbait, this
erratic soft plastic lure has gained its place in fisherman's tackle
boxes. This lure quickly gained acceptance for its ability to catch
those followers that just looked at standard top waters. When you are
getting swirls on your standard surface plugs try the Fluke. This
subtle lure can bring massive strikes when others fail.
You can work the lure over deep structure and bring
fish out of 30 feet of water to smash it. The Fluke has the advantage
over most other top waters in that it is weedless. You can bring it
over a pile of lily pads and any other vegetation, stop it in the
holes, and let it fall down. This technique can be deadly. Let it glide
across the top of moss. Watch the fish bump up through the muck and
follow it to the edge. When it reaches the edge, let it glide down and
hold on.
The lure is very versatile and you can work it in
variety of manners. You can keep it on the surface in a walk the dog
style. With or without added nail weights, you can fish the bait below
the surface with a stop and go or jerk and pause retrieve. It is vital
that you keep your eye on the line any little twitch or movement of the
line means set the hook.
You can use the Fluke behind a Carolina rig. With
it's subtle darting and stop and go action it will bring strikes from
lethargic fish. If you are fond of shallow water, you can skip the
Fluke under boat docks and overhanging banks. This can bring viscous
strikes from bass that never see that style of lure in their house.
In the beginning hook ups were a problem. However,
with the new round bend, wide gap hooks today, that problem is
outdated. Another inherent problem with soft jerk baits is line twist.
When you rig the lure, it is extremely important that it you put it on
the hook straight. If this does not solve the line twist problem, you
can add a barrel swivel 12 to 18 inches up the line.
If you have not tried, the Fluke do so this year.
You will be amazed at its fish catching ability. Add this lure to your
regular arsenal and get ready to catch some fish.
